Research Question
How do glaciers influence the structure, carbon flow, and functioning of Arctic fjord food webs?

Arctic fjords are rapidly changing as global warming causes glaciers to retreat inland, losing their connection to the sea. This shift from marine- to land-terminating glaciers creates distinct environmental conditions in the fjord, leading to changes in phytoplankton communities, from micro- to pico-sized organisms. However, the effects on the wider food web are still poorly understood.

In my PhD, I investigate how glacier type (marine- vs. land-terminating) influences the flow of energy through fjord food webs, linking pelagic (water column) and benthic (seafloor) communities. Using field data from southwest Greenland, stable isotope analysis, and food web modelling, I compare trophic niche use, food web structure and functioning between fjords with contrasting glacial influence. This research will contribute insights into how Arctic fjord ecosystems may respond to ongoing glacier retreat.
